The composition is a precursor to a larger work for voice and orchestra, Songs of Forever. It is scored for mezzo-soprano, flute and piano. It is set to three poems by Catherine Sivier, and it was performed in this version on several occasions. In spite of its success, it was not captivating enough in the eyes of the composer. He felt that the emotional content called for something more powerful, longer and substantial. Consequently, the piece was abandoned in favour of Songs of Forever, written in its place.
