Background
String Trio was written in January of 1967. At the time I considered it to be a study in writing for strings, paving the way for the composition of my first string quartet, which came later the same year.
The Trio is in a form of five miniatures, each one dealing with a specific challenge.
Number one is concerned with colours, two and four with lines, three with ostinato and five with clusters and contrasts. Number two and four have to do with independent lines. They are different from one another, though.
Number four has three very active independent lines, of which viola line dominates, while number two has equally important lines evolving at a slower pace. Number three is concerned with ostinato, while number five centers on sound clusters and dynamic contrasts.
String Trio was first performed in Poland at a concert of my own compositions, in 1967. Performed in Canada on a few occasions, it was subsequently recorded for CBC Radio.
